Dr. Biswarup Purkayastha is an accomplished Cardiothoracic Surgeon offering the complete spectrum of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery with a special focus in Mechanical Circulatory support and heart lung transplants with extensive training and expertise in India and abroad. After completing his MBBS in 2012 in India, he pursued a rigorous six-year Doctorate in Cardiothoracic Surgery (DrNB) from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, India, becoming board certified in 2019. He received his initial cardiothoracic surgical training at the esteemed Narayana Hrudayalaya Rabindranath Tagore Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Kolkata. The fellowship at Greenlane - Australasia’s largest cardiothoracic unit - and a respected training centre – exposed him to complex cardiothoracic procedures like heart-lung transplants and advanced aortic work. This enriched him to refine his skills in some of the most cutting-edge advances in cardiothoracic surgery. His training included hands-on experience with heart-lung transplants, as well as innovative heart and lung procurement techniques using advanced machine preservation systems such as XViVO, Paragonix and Transmedics OCS.

He furthered his interest in lung transplant attending the international Toronto-Vienna lung transplant academy. And also received industry-based training on ventricular assist devices (VADs) like Heart Mate 3 and HeartWare, participating in multiple LVAD and BiVAD implantations, bridge to transplants etc. Additionally, he gained valuable experience in ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and mechanical circulatory support systems, earning ELSO 101 and later the ELSO Level 1 ECMO certification gaining invaluable experience and exposure while working in multiple ELSO accredited ECMO ICUs.

Dr. Biswarup’s fellowship also exposed him to complex aortic surgeries, off particular significance in the Pacific population due to their unique predisposition to aortic pathologies. His time in Auckland included managing, assisting and also performing under supervision – on a variety of aortic conditions such as aneurysms, dissections, and extensive aortic repairs using both conventional and hybrid techniques. This included procedures like hemi-arch, total arch, valve sparing roots and Frozen Elephant Trunks (FET) combined with TEVAR.

Upon returning to India, Dr. Biswarup joined the highly respected Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, where he worked for over a year to spearhead their lung transplant programme and now continues to bring his skill and passion for cardiac surgery and transplants to the heart of Marathwada at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital in Aurangabad.

He credits his a large part of his success to finding a mentor in the truest sense - and a very respected name in heart lung transplants in Asia - Dr. Sandeep Attawar, a stalwart with over 500 heart lung transplants to his name.
